Mom Thinks I’m Mad at Her

The conversations with my mother went like this:

Mom: I need to get some new bra’s

Me: That could be something you could look for on your next Wal-mart shopping field trip from the Care Center

Mom: I’m not sure what size I need.

Me: Perhaps they can measure you for the proper size

Mom: I think I need to go to the mall to get measured and buy a “good” bra. (keep in mind that my mom hasn’t worn a bra for three years now and most of the other women at the center don’t either and she has four bra’s that I bought her in her drawer in her room)

Mom: I think I’ll ask Danny (my brother) if he and Bea (Danny’s wife) if they will take me to the mall to get some bra’s

Me: That would be great mom. It will take two people to get you in and out of your wheelchair and in and out of the car. Since you don’t walk anymore, I can’t manage taking you out by myself.

Mom: Well, I know Danny will take me. He’s a good son and he likes to do things for me

Me: Yes, Danny is great mom, and I am sure he will do whatever you ask of him

Mom: I’ll call him today and ask him if he will take me to the mall

Me. OK. I have to go now but I’ll see you soon

Two days’ latter:

Mom: I talked to Danny and he said he would be happy to take me to the mall and he and Bea will pick me up on Saturday morning

Me: Oh, that’s great mom. I’m sure you will find what you need and have fun too

Mom: Yes, Danny said he wouldn’t mind a bit to take me to the mall, he’s so good to me

Me: Yes mom, Danny is great. He’s always been good to me too and we have remained very close over the years

Mom: Well, I can’t wait for Saturday so Danny can take me to get my bra’s.

Me: I’m sure you will have fun mom. I have to go now but I’ll see you again on Monday.

Mom: I’ll call you

Me: OK mom. I love you, bye

Saturday afternoon Mom calls:

Mom: Oh, I had so much fun with Danny and Bea. They took me to the mall and Danny bought me three new bra’s but they didn’t have my size so they are shipping them to Danny’s house and he will bring them to me. They were over $40.00 each and I didn’t want Danny to spend that much money on me but he insisted. Then Danny and Bea took me out to lunch and I had the best hamburger ever.

Me: I’m glad you had a good time mom. I’m sure your new bra’s are nice. I don’t believe I’ve ever spent that much money for bra’s.

Mom: Well, I didn’t want Danny to spend that much money but he insisted so what could I do?

Me: I didn’t say Danny shouldn’t have bought the bra’s mom, I just said I’ve never spent that much money on bra’s. Danny can and should do whatever he wants to do it’s nothing to me how much money he spends.

Mom: Well, Danny really loves me and he is so good to me

Me: Yes, mom, Danny is wonderful. I love him a lot

Mom: Your mad!

Me: Why would I be mad mom?

Mom: You don’t think I should have let Danny spend that much money on me do you?

Me: Mom, I already told you it’s nothing to me what Danny spends

Mom: Well, I need to go rest now so you can go

Me: OK mom, I’ll see you on Wednesday. I love you. Bye

Wednesday when Shantel and I go visit mom:

Me: Hi mom (hug & kiss her). Shantel is sitting in the lobby, do you want to go sit there to visit?

Mom: Yes, let’s go to the lobby

Mom: Hi Shantel, give grandma a hug & kiss.

Me: How are you doing mom?

Mom: I’m just waiting for Danny to bring my bra’s, and everyone here is so excited they all want to see them

Me: I’m sure Danny with bring them to you as soon as he gets them.

Mom: Yes, I know he will because he said he would so I know he will.

Now I hear a woman calling for help. She was trying to get her wheelchair out of the dinning room and get back to her room. No aides were around so I got up to help her but mom told me to let her be because she always does that and someone else will push her to her room. I said, no mom, I’m going to help her and I’ll be right back. I said if you were calling for help mom I would want someone to help you. Then I left to push the woman down two long halls to find her room.

While I was gone apparently mom proceeds to tell Shantel I’m mad at her because Danny took her shopping when I wouldn’t. Shantel said she also tried to tell mom I wasn’t mad at all and that I was glad Danny and Bea were able to take her out for a while. Then mom told Shantel that while she was in the mall she had to go to the bathroom three different times so Bea had to help her but Bea didn’t mind doing that like I would.

On our way home from visiting mom Shantel told me she doesn’t know how I manage to go see grandma so often because she is always so negative and she doesn’t seem to appreciate what I do for her anyway she only seems to care about what Danny does. I told Shantel I do it because she is my mother and I believe it is the right thing to do and that’s all that matters to me.

Thanks Tracie but I am a FAR cry from being a Saint…:) I just believe it is easy to love people when they are being lovable…the challenge is loving them when they are not being lovable..that’s the challenge I try to meet everyday in my life and as long as I keep trying that’s the best I can do. Love you, Cindy

I talked with your Mom the day after Danny took her to Macy’s for the bras, and she sounded real happy Danny took her, Your Mom said she was happy to see you & Shantel the day you were there and was looking forward to seeing you again. She told me you were busy with Shantel , getting things ready for college and how well and smart Shantel is etc. All of you are doing a wonderful kindness just going to see your Mom and making sure she is comfortable. Hopefully in all our later years we will be as cheery and grateful for all that is done for us. I really want to thank you and I do pray for you all knowing it isn’t easy.
